At the bottom of a canal in Amsterdam, an Australian treasure hunter found a safe with a treasure stolen 20 years ago
Australian treasure hunter Leigh Webber found a stolen safe with collectable coins in the Amsterdam canal. Webber found the treasure when he was checking the bottom of the canal with a magnet. He managed to find a place where at least 46 safes were underwater. One of them turned out to be so large that the treasure hunter had to hire a crane to lift it.
“In the end, with a lot of effort, we cracked it,” Webber said in his Tiktok. "To our surprise, it turned out to be full of coins." Some had protective covers that coin collectors use. Judging by the inscription "Hortus Bonaticus 1682-1982 Amsterdam", these were commemorative coins issued for the anniversary of the Amsterdam Botanical Garden. The treasure hunter contacted the police and found out that the coins were stolen more than 20 years ago.
Each one costs about £30 (over 1,100 Ukrainian hryvnias - approx.). They were made in 1982 and there are only 500 of them. So, in total, the value of the treasure is 15,000 pounds or about 580,000 hryvnias.
